notes from Mom

I've talked to various of the family last week and weekend and come up with some pieces of information that relate to planning for the reunion.
Curtis and Maryvonne are still working on their plans.  As you know they want to include a trip to the Florida panhandle to visit an old friend. It isn't decided yet whether this will be before the reunion or after the beach.  He thought they would have it pinned down in the next week or two.  Since this could possibly affect return plans from the beach for me and Jane, we've decided to wait on making our travel plans.
I've talked to Jane and it looks like all of the Krumms will be there by noon on Saturday. She'll be driving from Charlotte, bringing everyone except Katie.  She flies to Asheville and someone will need to pick her up there on Saturday at about 10:30 AM.  I've also talked to Bethany and Katie K. They, and Josh, will need to fly out of Asheville on Tuesday to get back to jobs.  So that could affect plans for what we do when - such as the train trip we talked about.
That's about it for now.   Love,  Mom

Hotel reservations from Mom

Here are the reservations I made today at Day’s Inn, 201 Tunnel Road, Asheville, Phone # 828-252-4000. I talked to asst. manager,Jed, and reserved 8 rooms, each with two double beds. At this time four are for July 2 (Fri.) and the other four start July 3 (Sat.) All are for checkout on July 7 (Wed.). These starting dates can be adjusted once I know when Curtis and family, Paul and I are arriving.
All are under my name and confirmation #’s are 294600 - 294603 for the July 2 start and 294604 – 294607 for the Jul 3.  He gave me a discounted group rate which seems to me to be quite reasonable, especially for a holiday weekend.
Both the Krumms and the Quacks are driving from Charlotte and presumably Curtis and family, too, so we should have plenty of cars. I talked to Paul last night and he's planning to come but not to the beach. Doesn't know about Vicki yet. I'm thinking I'll come to Asheville, probably on Thursday.
I assume you may have heard from Jane about her interest in coming to the beach, though the rest of her family can't do it. It looks to me like there's enough room in the house for her and Curt would have room for her going to the beach, but it could be a problem coming back, when there would be six of us and only one car. Also she'll need to know what place works best for flying back - maybe she and I should both go from Charleston. I'll work on that another day.

BEACH!

Okay folks, I rented a beach house for Wednesday through Sunday.  We decided on Edisto Island rather than Folly Beach.  Folly Beach had very little availability for that week and the prices were sky high.  We prefer Edisto, which is another 30 minutes away from Charleston, but still within easy distance for a day trip, and also 1 1/2 hours from Savannah, GA, for Curtis and Maryvonne who may be driving south.  It is a beautiful, non-commercialized beach, with a nice bike path, fresh fish and shrimp to buy, nearby farmer's markets, and opportunities to kayak or take a tour of the old island homes.  We love it!

Here's the link to the house, which I think will comfortably accommodate Ken, Jen & kids, the Quackenbushes, Curtis and Maryvonne, and Lois.

It is not right on the beach, but an easy walk just a few minutes away.

Notes from Mom:
(1) The dates: The major reunion events will be on Saturday, July 3 through Tuesday, July 6. That means we’re thinking of  Friday, July 2 and Wednesday, July 7 as travel days. (Bethany says they might do the red eye Friday night.)
(2)  Program ideas:  I’m planning on providing hotel rooms, hopefully in downtown Asheville for the 2nd thru the 6th. Saturday and Sunday we’ll do various sight-seeing in Asheville – Ken’s suggested a catered Ethiopian dinner Sunday at his place. There’s a train trip to the Smokies, which can include river rafting, we could do on Monday and either hiking and sightseeing in the nearby mountains or visiting the Biltmore estate Tuesday.
(3)  A  possible post-reunion beach trip:

Here's a general link for Asheville information.
here are a two of the hotels we discussed (Mom, Jennifer and I):
The Asheville Renaissance is downtown, and you can walk from there to shops, restaurants, the Shindig on the Green, etc.
The Country Inn and Suites is what you'd expect, pretty much where you'd expect it. I think its fine, but you'll want to drive to downtown, and to our house from there (about ten minutes to either.)
We also discussed the possibility of a rental house for the week, but I think given the holiday weekend that's not going to be such a great option. Places will be expensive, and I'm not sure the benefits of it are that great, since most of the activities can happen at our house or in and around Asheville. Mostly we need a convenient and comfortable hotel.
I'm going to post this now, and will follow up with some travel information.
Hello family - I have set up this blogsite to use for discussing and organizing the 2010 reunion. I hope it will work for that, but I am blog-illiterate really, so am not sure. But it seems to me we could use it to post ideas and discussions about schedules, activities, hotels, etc. I am hoping I can post links to different hotels and activities, maps, etc., so we can plan, and also can get psyched! Okay? So here's post 1. Ken.
